Julia Sayers: Dreams

“I don’t know where dreams come from. Most of mine are just scraps and jumbles. But sometimes you get one that will just pierce you through, more vivid and coherent than anything in reality, even if it’s thrown together a thousand different things from different times in your life. Usually, for me, those dreams are suffused with some kind of great, unassuageable longing, almost unbearable but somehow sweet. (Pause.) But last night I dreamed there was a rat in the bathroom!”
